Breaking Down Barriers to Technology Adoption

In February 2025, Diverge hosted its first-ever Innovation Day event in Phoenix, Arizona. Innovation Day events aim to highlight the latest technological advancements in the construction industry and foster collaboration among Hensel Phelps employees and partners.

Thai Nguyen, Diverge’s Director of Innovation, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of continuous innovation and collaboration. He encouraged attendees to explore new ideas and consider the impact of implementing advanced technology on jobsites. Following his remarks, representatives from Hensel Phelps, Hewlett Packard, LucidBots, Hilti,  Inc., Rugged Robotics, Ken Robotech, Teleworker.ai, Flyability, Exyn and Dusty Robotics provided insights on improving safety, efficiency and productivity across the industry.

Presentations with industry experts highlighted several common challenges faced when introducing new technologies:

  • General resistance to new technologies and processes
  • Concerns about return on investment
  • High upfront costs
  • Need for skilled workers and training on new tools

Despite these obstacles, the long-term benefits of implementing construction technology are substantial. The initial investment is often outweighed by savings in labor costs, especially for tasks that are repetitive, hazardous or physically demanding. Additionally, new tools and on-site construction automation lead to improved collaboration, enhanced jobsite safety, reduced rework and better overall quality of life for workers.

Robots Enhancing Safety and Efficiency

Hands-on demonstrations of advanced technologies in construction play a key role when encouraging innovation on jobsites. The opportunity for teams to interact directly with tools builds confidence and understanding of real-world applications. Innovation Day partners showcased the following:

  • Flyability: The Elios 3 drone inspects tight or hard-to-reach spaces like ceilings, enhancing worker safety and project productivity.
  • HP SitePrint, Rugged Robotics and Dusty Robotics: Robotic layout printers that speed up and improve accuracy in marking construction layouts.
  • Jaibot by Hilti, Inc.: An autonomous drilling robot that improves precision, safety and productivity in overhead plumbing, electrical and mechanical installations.
  • Sherpa Drone by LucidBots: Designed to perform elevated exterior cleaning and chemical spraying, minimizing worker risk.
  • Teleworker.ai: Combines robotics with augmented and virtual reality, allowing remote control for data collection on construction sites.
  • Tomorobo by Ken Robotech: A semi-autonomous robot designed to bring safety and automation to tying rebar on jobsites.

Building a Smarter Future

Building on the success of Innovation Day, Diverge envisions a construction industry fueled by collaboration and innovation, with technology leading the way. The event demonstrated how AI, machine learning, drones and robotics are already reshaping the construction industry, making jobsites safer and more efficient. As innovation continues to drive change, the future of construction belongs to those bold enough to lead it.

Joist AI participated in the 2025 AGC Annual Convention, held April 8–10 in Columbus, Ohio. The company exhibited in the Diverge Innovation Lab, a collaborative space powered by Hilti and presented in partnership with Hensel Phelps. The lab brought together industry leaders, startups and project teams to explore and refine emerging technologies in robotics, automation, artificial intelligence and digital tools. As a strategic innovation partner, Hensel Phelps continued to lead the industry through its Diverge program by connecting construction professionals with high-impact technologies like Joist AI.

Joist AI’s platform addressed one of the construction industry’s most time-consuming tasks: preparing competitive proposals. The technology automated content generation streamlined workflows and ensured RFP compliance using past project data. As a result, construction firms reduced proposal development time by 30 percent and increased their chances of winning work. Convention attendees visited Booth 813 in Exhibit Hall A to see live demonstrations and meet the Joist AI team. With its deep industry knowledge and AI-powered tools, Joist AI provided a modern solution to help firms pursue and secure projects more efficiently.

From BIM Design Inc. – In this week’s episode of the Future Construct Podcast (1 hour interview), we are excited to feature Joseph “Roee” Shua-Haim, Founder and CEO at Hathaware (@Hathaware). He graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in the summer of 2016. After graduating, Joseph moved to NYC and began his career as a structural engineer. Soon enough, Joseph took on an opportunity to shift into project management in RE development. Since making the shift, Joseph has managed over $85M in ground up developments.

In Part 2 of this podcast, we are excited to feature Thai Nguyen, Director of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) at Hensel Phelps (@HenselPhelps). Thai has more than 20 years of experience in the architectural and construction industries. As Director of VDC, Thai drives the innovation of construction processes for Hensel Phelps, one of the United States’ largest employee-owned general contracting firms. In this role he leads VDC initiatives for all of Hensel Phelps’ district offices, managing a team of more than 80 individuals. This team provides company-wide leadership in VDC systems, tools and processes. They continually expand the use of virtual design and construction tools within Hensel Phelps, and within the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry.

Highlights of Joseph and Thai’s interviews with host Amy Peck (@AmyPeckXR) include:

– The evolution of what’s being built and opportunities for mid-size companies to bring technology in and improve processes

– How Joseph’s developing Hathaware based on insights from conversations with customers

– Some of the unique challenges of bringing in new software to a large company

– Talent out of the BIM world that’s leading innovation, and how that may be causing a shift in new innovation roles within Hensel Phelps and other companies
